How to get your brand recommended by ChatGPT: a playbook for DTC brands (2026)
More buyers now skip the search results and ask an AI assistant which product to buy. ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google's AI answers name a handful of brands and move on. If your brand is not one of them, you lose the sale without ever knowing the conversation happened.
We covered whether ChatGPT recommends your products and how to check. This is the follow-up: a step-by-step playbook a small team can run in a month, with no special tools and no budget beyond your time.
The short version
AI assistants repeat what they can find and confirm across the web. So: check where you stand, describe your brand the same way everywhere, publish pages that answer buyer questions word for word, earn mentions on sites AI tools cite, let AI crawlers in, and re-check every month.
Why AI assistants skip small brands
When someone asks "what is the best LED face mask for sensitive skin" or "best AI marketing tool for a small Shopify store", the assistant builds its answer from sources it trusts: review sites, comparison articles, forums, brand pages and its own training data. It names the brands that show up often and consistently across those sources.
Small brands usually miss out for three reasons. There is no page that answers the buyer's exact question. Few independent sites mention them. And the brand describes itself differently in every place, so the assistant cannot be confident what it is. None of that needs an ad budget to fix.
Step 1: Get a baseline in 30 minutes
Open ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google, and run the same set of prompts. Use a logged-out or private window where you can, so your own history does not skew the answer. Try these, filled in for your category:
- "What is the best [product] for [your customer]?"
- "Best [product] under [your price]"
- "[Competitor] alternatives"
- "[Your brand] vs [competitor]"
- "Is [your brand] any good?"
- "How do I solve [the problem your product solves]?"
For each one, write down whether you are named, where you appear in the list, what it says about you, and which sources it cites. Perplexity and ChatGPT search show their sources, and that list is your to-do list: those are the sites you need to appear on.
Step 2: Describe your brand the same way everywhere
Write one plain sentence that says what you sell, who it is for and what makes it different. Then use it, word for word or close to it, on your homepage title and meta description, your About page, your Shopify or Amazon listing, your social bios and any directory profiles. When every source agrees, an assistant can state it with confidence. When they disagree, it tends to leave you out.
Step 3: Publish pages that answer buyer questions word for word
AI assistants look for a page that answers the exact question. Build the pages your buyers are asking for:
- "Best [product] for [use case]" guides that honestly include other brands alongside yours.
- Comparison pages: "[your brand] vs [competitor]", with a clear table.
- Alternatives pages: "[competitor] alternatives" for buyers already looking to switch.
- "Is it worth it" pages that answer price and value questions directly.
Put the direct answer in the first two sentences, then the detail. Add a short FAQ with FAQ schema. Keep important facts in text, not only in images, so crawlers can read them. For a live example of the format, see our best AI marketing tools roundup.
Step 4: Earn mentions on the sites AI tools cite
Your own site is one source. Assistants trust a brand more when independent sources agree. In order of effort:
- Reviews. Ask happy customers for a review on Google, Trustpilot or the review platform your category uses. Real, recent reviews are one of the strongest signals you control.
- Roundup articles. Find the "best [product]" articles your baseline check surfaced and email the authors with a short, useful pitch and a sample or trial.
- Communities. Answer questions in Reddit threads and niche forums where your buyers ask for recommendations. Be open that you are the founder, and help first.
- Podcasts and press. A founder interview or a local business feature adds another independent description of what you do.

Step 5: Let AI search crawlers read your site
Check your robots.txt file and make sure you are not blocking the crawlers AI search tools use, such as OpenAI's OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot. Submit your sitemap to Google Search Console and to Bing Webmaster Tools, since several AI assistants draw on web search indexes to find sources. Add Organization, Product and FAQ structured data, and keep pages fast and readable without JavaScript tricks.
Step 6: Re-check every month
Run the same prompts from step 1 on the same day each month and log the results. You are looking for trends: named more often, described more accurately, cited from more places. A spreadsheet works fine. If checking by hand gets tedious, a tracker helps: we compare the options in the best AI visibility tools for DTC brands and in Lantern vs Torvio, and Torvio's Kova runs the check for you every week as part of its brief.
What not to do
Do not post fake reviews or pay for them. Do not spam forums with links. Do not publish dozens of thin "AI-optimised" pages that say nothing. These tactics risk penalties from the platforms, and they rarely move AI answers anyway, because the assistants weigh independent, consistent sources.
How long it takes
Assistants that search the web live can reflect new pages and mentions within weeks of them being indexed. Answers drawn from a model's training data change much more slowly. Plan on a few months of steady work, and measure monthly rather than daily.
Frequently asked questions
How do I get ChatGPT to recommend my brand?
Make the open web describe you clearly and often. Publish pages that answer your buyers' exact questions, keep one consistent description of your brand everywhere, earn reviews and third-party mentions, and make sure AI search crawlers can read your site. Then re-check the same prompts every month.
Why does ChatGPT recommend my competitors and not me?
Usually because they have more corroborating sources: more reviews, more roundup and comparison articles that name them, and clearer pages about what they sell and who it is for. Look at which sources AI tools cite for your category and work on getting into those.
Can I pay to have ChatGPT recommend my products?
No. You cannot buy a place inside the answer itself. Where AI assistants show ads, they are labelled separately from the answer. Being named in the answer comes from what the web says about you.
How long does it take to show up in AI answers?
Assistants that search the web live, like ChatGPT search and Perplexity, can pick up new pages and mentions within weeks of them being indexed. Answers that rely on the model's training data change much more slowly. Expect a few months of steady work before you see a consistent change.
Does SEO still matter for AI search?
Yes. AI assistants that browse the web lean on search indexes to find sources, so pages that rank and get indexed are more likely to be cited. Good SEO and good AI visibility mostly come from the same work: clear, specific pages and real mentions.
Do I need a paid tool to track AI visibility?
Not at first. A monthly manual check with the prompts in this guide is enough to start. A tracker like Lantern, or the weekly AI search check in Torvio, saves time once AI search is sending you real buyers.
